~ Continuing About Carbon ~

Last time we spoke about the changing attitude toward carbon, so today I thought I would start with a few facts and figures.

Firstly, not all organic inputs have the same carbon levels. For example analysis of the two manure products we use at Katek reveals that the Chicken has around 40% C, but the cow only has about 22% C. Secondly size matters, carbon sources that have a small particle size will be more immediately useful that something big. And thirdly to change the organic carbon level on your soil test by 1 percent would require the addition of between 25 and 30 tonnes of chicken manure per Ha, or 55 to 65 tonnes of cow manure.

With those few things in mind it`s easy to understand why some will simply throw their hands in the air and say it`s all too hard. The thing is it doesn`t need to be. For many years the best practice advice in virtually all cropping situations has been to place your fertiliser in a band, either in, or  very close to, the plant row. Why? Because that is where the plant will be foraging for nutrients, and where you are probably concentrating your irrigation efforts. Therefore it seems logical that we focus on this same area to up the ante with carbon as well.

We know that carbon is the secret to sustainable biology populations, we also know that biology plays a vital role in the mineralisation of nutrients, so let`s put the carbon where the fertiliser goes! Or better still, lets wrap the fertiliser up in a carbon based pellet (Like Katek Super Phoska does) then wherever the fertiliser goes, a good chunk of carbon goes with it.

Products like these are all in a days work at Katek, we can create an infinite number of blend combinations in a variety of different forms that will suit most types of application equipment. Carbon, it doesn`t need to be difficult.
